Zorana Arunović of Serbia shot a world record score to claim the gold medal in the women's air pistol event at the European 10 metres Shooting Championship in Maribor.

Russia's Vladimir Maslennikov, bronze medallist at last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, repeated the feat of the Serbian as he won the men's air rifle with a world record score of 247.7 points.

Arunović, a world champion in 2010, produced a superb display as she finished with a total of 246.9 points at the Hotel Habakuk and Dras Center.

Olena Kostevych of Ukraine, winner of the Olympic gold medal in the 10m air pistol title at Athens 2004, was forced to settle for silver.

She scored 239.5 points, with Sonia Franquet of Spain taking bronze on 218.9.

"I decided to take one shot in time, not thinking in advance anything or look what the others are doing," Arunović said.

"I did only my own shooting."

She added: "I did the same result as I have done at training during the two to three months.

"During that time I had some difficulties and I’m happy that I managed to solve them and the result was that I could do a good set today.

"The result was perfect."

The golden success continued for Serbia in the Slovenian city as Arunović helped her nation secure the team title.

The Serbian side, also including Bobana Velickovic and Jasmina Milovanovic, proved far too strong for the rest of the field as they ended with a total of 1,145 points.

Germany and Russia claimed the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Maslennikov was the star performer in the men's air rifle competition and finished comfortably ahead of Ukrainian Oleh Tsarkov, who was 2.8 points behind in second place.

Alexis Raynaud from France edged Italian Giuseppe Pio Capano for bronze.

Maslennikov's achievements today mirrored those of Arunović as Russia clinched the team honours.

The 22-year-old and team-mates Sergey Kamenskiy and Evgeny Panchenko recorded a total of 1878.5 points, with Serbia taking silver and Germany the bronze.

The European 10 metres Shooting Championship is due to conclude tomorrow.
