The Gorilla International Taekwondo Open has been officially added to the World Taekwondo Federation's (WTF) calendar of international competitions.

The event, organised by the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation (RTF), is the second in Africa to be recognised by the sport's governing body.

It joins the Egypt Open in earning international recognition from the WTF, and is the first recognised competition in sub-Saharan Africa.

The fourth Gorilla International Open will take place this year between March 31 and April 2 at the Amahoro Indoor Stadium in the Rwandan capital of Kigali.

Taking place simultaneously with the second Africa Para-Taekwondo Open, both international competitions are expected to attract around 600 players from more than 30 countries.

"Making it on the calendar of WTF international competitions gives the Gorilla Open more credibility," Regis Iyumva, the head of competitions at the RTF told The New Times

"Countries are interested in being part of it more than ever before.

"The number of participating countries might grow up to 40, all continents represented.

"Competitors will be looking to improve their rankings in the WTF, which is one of the key criteria in qualifying for Olympic and Paralympic Games."

At the three-day long tournament, Rwanda will be represented by junior and senior teams in the men's and women's competitions.

According to RTF officials, 36 Rwandans will take part in the Gorilla Open while another 30 will represent the country in the Para-tournament.

The teams have started non-residential training under the tutelage of head coach Irene Bagire.
