Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei won the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Japan Super Series title for the sixth time in his career after getting the better of Denmark's Jan Ø. Jørgensen at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

The triple Olympic silver medallist had not dropped a game en-route to the final but the top seed needed three to defeat the Dane, ranked third in the 2020 Olympic host city.

Lee, winner of the competition for three years in a row from 2012 before relinquishing the title to Chinese rival Lin Dan last year, eventually came through 21-18, 15-21, 21-16.

In the women's competition, China's He Bingjiao defeated compatriot Sun Yu in three to win a first title at Super Series level.

This was seventh seed against eighth seed and it was the lower-ranked He, the Summer Youth Olympic champion from Nanjing in 2014, who triumphed 21-14, 7-21, 21-18.

Two more titles for China arrived in doubles competition with men's pair Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen easing to success against South Korea's Kim Gi-jung and Ko Sung-hyun, 21-12, 21-12.

Ko returned for the mixed doubles final but was unsuccessful again as he lost to China's Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen with team-mate Kim Ha-na.

The South Koreans, the top seeds, were beaten 21-10, 21-15.

In the women's doubles there was home disappointment as Japan's top seeds Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi lost a one game lead before losing to Denmark's Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl.

The Europeans recovered from losing a tight opener to triumph 19-21, 21-18, 21-12.
