World Championship javelin silver medallist Ihab Abdelrahman has reportedly failed a doping test, which could rule the Egyptian athlete out of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old’s failure was announced by the Egyptian National Anti-Doping Organisation, with Abdelrahman testing positive for the hormone testosterone in an out of competition test on April 17.

According to sport360.com, the Egyptian’s B-sample has now been sent to Barcelona for further analysis.

Should the test come back negative, Abdelrahman’s provisional suspension would be lifted which would allow him to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, with the athlete viewed as a major medal hope.

Abdelrahman claimed silver at last year’s International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) World Championships in Beijing, with a throw of 88.99 metres.

Kenya’s Julius Yego claimed the gold medal, after achieving a distance of 92.72m.

As well as his medal at the World Championships, Abdelrahman won gold at the All African Games in Brazzaville, while he  won the Diamond League events in Eugene and Stockholm earlier this year.

"I am a million percent innocent," said Abdelrahman, according to Reuters.

"I have been taking food supplements since 2013 and passed every previous test.

"I feel I'm in a nightmare, it's impossible I have put myself in this situation.

"I did urine and blood tests in February and the results were negative, I was also tested in May and the result was negative.

“Why is this the only positive result, why did this happen at this time?"

Egyptian Athletics Federation President Walid Ata has reportedly claimed that the country’s National Olympic Committee were "getting revenge" on Abdelrahman, after the javelin thrower criticised them in a post on Facebook last week.
