Xu Xin claimed his fourth Asian Cup men's singles title by beating Chinese team-mate Zhang Jike in Dubai today, to take another crucial step towards an elusive singles spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Xu, who won Asian Cup titles in 2012, 2013 and 2015, traded blows with the reigning Olympic champion as the first four sets of the final were shared between the two.

But the power and consistency of the left-hander eventually prevailed as Xu claimed the fifth and sixth games for a 4-2 victory.

He will now be confident of joining the absent world number one and world champion Ma Long in the singles draw at Rio 2016, where each country is permitted just two players.

Zhang, world champion in 2011 and 2013, has been less successful in the last three years and may have to settle for a spot in the team event.

Hong Kong's Wong Chun Ting won 4-2 in the bronze medal match over Gao Ning of Singapore.

A four-time winner was also crowned in the women's draw as Liu Shiwen claimed a 4-1 victory over Chinese compatriot Li Xiaoxia.

Liu added to her Asian Cup titles in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

Singapore's defending champion Feng Tianwei had to settle for bronze this time around after a 4-0 win over Hong Kong's Tie Yana.
