Top seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand beat Indonesia’s Jesica Muljati today to book her place in the second round of the women’s singles event at the Badminton World Federation New Zealand Open in Auckland.

The 22-year-old triumphed 21-17, 21-13 at the North Shore Events Centre and will now go onto face Australia’s Yingzi Jiang tomorrow.

Jiang, who came through qualification yesterday, defeated compatriot Jennifer Tam 21-14, 21-23, 21-15.

Second seed Fitriani Fitriani of Indonesia is also through to the second round after overcoming Australia’s Tiffany Ho 21-14, 21-4.

Next up for her is Canada’s Brittney Tam, who beat home favourite Sally Fu 21-13, 21-4.

The highest-seeded player to suffer elimination from the women’s singles draw today was Malaysia’s Ying Ying Lee as she lost 17-21, 21-13, 22-20 to Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po.

Pai’s reward is a meeting with Japan’s Rei Nagata, a 21-17, 21-18 victor over China’s Cai Yanyan.

There was also action today in the second round of the men’s singles event with third seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia the most notable casualty.

Christie lost 21-17, 21-13 to Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, who goes onto face 13th seed Misha Zilberman of Israel in the third round.

Top seed Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei defeated India’s Pratul Joshi 21-13, 24-22 in their second round match. 

Standing between him and a place in the quarter-finals is ninth seed Wei Feng Chong of Malaysia.
