Nina Burger scored the only goal of the game as Austria won their first-ever major tournament match against Switzerland at the UEFA Women's European Championships in the De Adelaarshorst Stadium in Deventer today.

Burger, the Austrian captain, was at the centre of virtually every dramatic moment in the match.

She first finished besides the near-post to give her side the lead shortly before half-time.

On the hour mark, she was then brought down outside the area when clean through by Switzerland's Rahel Kiwic.

Kiwic was duly shown the first red card at a women's Euros since England's Casey Stoney in 2009.

Burger even had a chance to make it 2-0 in the closing stages before dinking over from close range.

But her side hung on for a famous victory over their neighbours in Group C.

Group favourites France left it late before beating Iceland 1-0 in today's other match at Tilburg's Koning Willem II Stadium.

They required a late penalty from striker Eugenie le Sommer to break down a stubborn defence.

It followed a string of missed chances earlier in the game.
