Battulga Khaltmaa has claimed victory in Mongolia’s Presidential election as counting in the second round of voting draws to a close.

The 54-year-old Democratic Party candidate, who has been head of the Mongolian Judo Association since 2006, has 50.6 per cent of the vote, putting him ahead of his rival Miyeegombyn Enkbold of the ruling Mongolian People’s Party.

These figures were released by the country's General Election Commission, although the final result is still to be determined as votes from Mongolians living abroad are still to be added to the poll.

Battulga is set to replace Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, the President since 2009.

The first round of voting saw polls split between him, Miyeegombyn and a third candidate, Sainkhuugiin Ganbaatar of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party.

Despite Battulga having the most votes in this round, 38.64 per cent, he did not have enough for an overall majority and therefore the second poll was required.

The election has been seen as controversial with corruption claims surrounding it, although these rumours have not been proven.

Under Battulga’s stewardship of the Mongolia Judo Association, the country won their first Olympic gold with Naidangiin Tuvshinbavar topping the men’s 100 kilogram podium at Beijing 2008.

He then won a silver at London 2012 despite fighting with a torn left knee ligament.
