The Chilean Ministry of Sports has announced it will invest over €1.5 million (£1.3 million/$1.6 million) to improve the sporting infrastructure for Para-athletes in the country.

At an event in Santiago, Minister of Sports Pablo Squella confirmed that money will be invested in constructing a host of new facilities.

This includes a weights room, new five-a-side and seven-a-side football pitches and the renovation of three tennis courts next to the Estadio Nacional.

“We are happy to begin with this project which will benefit the National Paralympic Committee and Paralympic athletes,” said Squella.

“It is a satisfaction to know they will have the best infrastructure to train for the different competitions.”

Chile's only Paralympic medal was a gold at London 2012, when athlete Cristian Valenzuela won the men's 5,000 metres T11 event.

Last year the country sent a team of 15 athletes, including seven men and eight women, to Rio 2016.

They competed in athletics, canoe sprint, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis and wheelchair tennis but failed to win any medals.

Despite this, the new facilities are positive about upcoming events following the investment.

"This is a terrific achievement," added the Paralympic Committee of Chile President Ricardo Elizalde.

"We are very grateful to the Ministry of Sports and the National Institute of Sports.

"This will help us get ready in the best possible way ahead of the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games.”

Earlier this month, International Paralympic Committee chief executive Xavier Gonzalez claimed progress had been made by Lima 2019, but he said there was much work still to be done by the Parapan American Games organisers.

Issues include construction progress and a lack of individuals clearly responsible for key areas.

"With over two years to go, there is still much work to do, but the professionalism shown by the people here makes us feel confident the Parapan Games will be another step forward," said Gonzalez.

The Parapan Games will take place at the end of August in 2019.
