The Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City will host the 2018 edition of the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup, it has been announced.

The event, considered one of the highlights on the international wrestling calendar outside of the Olympic Games and World Championships, is due to be held from April 21 to 22 at the venue, located at the University of Iowa.

The competition features the top eight men’s freestyle wrestling teams in the world.

It will be the 30th time the United States has staged the event including last year’s tournament, which took place at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The Carver-Hawkeye Arena hosted the American wrestling team’s Olympic trials before London 2012 and Rio 2016.

The same Organising Committee for the two events will take charge of preparations for the Freestyle World Cup, according to USA Wrestling.

"USA Wrestling is extremely pleased that the Freestyle World Cup is returning to the United States in 2018," USA Wrestling executive director Rich Bender said.

"We are excited to partner with our hosts at the University of Iowa and in the Iowa City community, who have been leaders in presenting the two most successful US Olympic Team trials for wrestling in history.

"The Freestyle World Cup is a fabulous competition which fans will enjoy.

"Iowa City is one of the greatest wrestling cities in the world and Carver-Hawkeye Arena is a historic location that will be a spectacular showcase for our sport."

Iran clinched their fourth consecutive Freestyle World Cup crown in Los Angeles last year with a 5-3 victory over the host nation in the final.

The nation’s World Cup winning streak is the second-longest in the 43-year history of the event, bettered only by the five straight titles for the US from 1999 to 2003, when they last triumphed.

Tehran in Iran is scheduled to hold the 2017 competition on February 16 and 17.

The field for the 2018 Freestyle World Cup will be determined based upon the men’s freestyle team results of the previous year’s World Wrestling Championships in Paris, a candidate city for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"It is a thrill to once again welcome the top wrestlers in the world to the University of Iowa," said University of Iowa director of athletics Gary Barta.

"The Iowa City community, Hawkeye wrestling fans and wrestlers from all over the country have shown over and over again that there is no better wrestling venue than Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

"We were privileged to host the 2012 and 2016 United States Olympic Wrestling Team Trials and are excited to share our passion for the sport with United World Wrestling and the top international wrestlers from around the world."
