Cuban boxers had mixed fortunes in the finals of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Youth World Championships with two victories and a pair of defeats in Saint Petersburg today.

Osvary Morrell Gutierrez would secure Cuba’s first gold medal of the day, with the fighter emerging as a 5-0 victor against Ukraine’s Roman Savitskyi in the 81-kilogram light heavyweight division.

All five of the judges’ scorecards are being used to determine the winner of each bout as part of the format of the fifth edition of the event.

Dainier Pero Justiz sought to maintain Cuba’s history of success in the men’s 91kg heavyweight division when he faced Russia’s Vladimir Uzunian.

The Cuban would emerge as a 3-2 split decision victor in the 7,000 capacity Sibur Arena.

There would be disappointment for Cuba’s Elio Crespo Santos as he was defeated 3-2 by Japan’s Hayato Tsutsumi in the 52kg flyweight event.

Santos’ team-mate Jorge Grinan would also have to make do with a silver medal in the 46kg light flyweight competition, following a comprehensive 5-0 loss to Indian boxer Sachin.

The United States were left celebrating several triumphs, with Marc Castro claiming gold at the Championships for a second successive year.

He earned a split decision 3-2 win over Samatali Toltayev of Kazakhstan in the 56kg bantamweight division.

Castro’s success was swiftly followed by a victory for his American team-mate Delante Johnson, who overcame Uzbekistan’s Bilolbek Mirzarakhimov 4-1 in the 60kg lightweight event.

The host nation would end up empty handed in their pursuit of gold as Russia’s 64kg light welterweight Sergei Margarian was beaten 4-1 by Turkey’s Tugrulhan Erdemir.

The same score would see Kazakhstan’s Sadriddin Akhmedov win the 69kg welterweight final against Ukraine’s Pavlo Gula.

Akhmedov’s team-mate Bek Nurmaganbet would fall short in the 75kg middleweight gold medal match, with the Kazakh losing via a 3-2 split decision verdict to Scotland’s William Hutchison.

The final gold medal of the Championships was claimed by Justis Huni, with the Australian triumphing 5-0 in the over 91kg super heavyweight division.
