Britain’s Kelly Edwards earned a first continental title by triumphing in the women’s under-52 kilogram division at the European Judo Open in Glasgow.

Edwards has won three bronze medals in recent weeks, having returned to action after a prolonged spell on the sidelines due to injury.

The home favourite defeated France’s Amandine Buchard with a dramatic golden score verdict in the semi-final stage of the contest, as a shido penalty proved the difference.

Following the tightly contested win, Edwards came from a yuko down to beat Brazil’s Raquel Silva in the gold medal match with a waza-ari score.

“I was quite confident I could win this contest and I was able to stay composed which was important,” said Edwards.

“The highlight of my day was definitely the fact that I was able to compete in front of friends and my family.

“It is rare for example that my parents can watch me competing live, however, they drove up here just to see me and this is really special.”

Buchard would bounce back from her semi-final loss to claim a bronze medal, along with Belgium’s Myriam Blavier.

There was further success for the British team when Lucy Renshall beat Germany’s Nadja Bazynski in the women’s under-63 kilogram final.

Bazynski’s team-mate Lea Reimann and Austria’s Magdalena Krssakova secured the division’s bronze medals.

The Netherlands and Canada were also able to celebrate gold medals in the women’s divisions in Glasgow, with their victories coming through Kim Akker and Jessica Klimkait respectively.

Akker defeated Sephora Corcher of France in the women’s 48kg competition, with Spain’s Cinta Garcia Mesa and France’s Melanie Clement taking bronze.

In the under-57kg event, Klimkait saw off the challenge of Israel’s Ali Grossman to win gold.

Italy’s Anna Righetti and Germany’s Jacqueline Lisson claimed the division’s bronze medals.

The Brazilian team were hugely impressive in the men’s events, with Phelipe Pelim and Eduardo Barbosa impressing.

Barbosa claimed a victory in the men’s under 73kg final against Portugal’s Luis Carmo, with France’s Mathieu Little Lebreton and Canada’s Bradley Langlois taking bronze.

The victory for Pelim came in the under 60kg event as he overcame Spain’s Joaquin Gomis, while Britain’s Neil MacDonald and the Netherlands’ Tornike Tsjakadoea also reached the podium.
