Budapest has been awarded the rights to stage the 2018 United World Wrestling (UWW) World Championships, the governing body announced today.

The Hungarian capital, a candidate to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, was chosen by UWW's Executive Committee to hold the flagship competition.

It will mark a swift return to Budapest for the Championships, with the event last held in the city in 2013.

Budapest was also selected to stage the 2017 Under-23 European Wrestling Championships, one of the governing body’s newest competitions.

They are currently preparing to host this year's Non-Olympic Weight Wrestling World Championships, due to take place from December 10 to 11 at the SYMA Sports and Conference Centre.

The venue has been included on Budapest’s Games Plan for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, as the city takes on the challenge of Los Angeles and Paris, with Rome’s bid looking certain to be ended in the coming days.

This is due to the withdrawal of support from the Mayor of the Italian capital, Virginia Raggi.

Budapest is also due to stage 2017 World Championships for both judo and swimming, while they will also host the 2019 World Table Tennis Championships.

UWW has also confirmed that Kharkhov in Ukraine has been awarded the rights to stage this year's Wrestling Club World Championships, due to take place between December 8 and 9.

The competition had been scheduled to take place in Budapest, in conjunction with the Non-Olympic Weight World Championships, but will now be a separate event.

The 2017 Freestyle Wrestling World Cup and Greco-Roman World Cup have also swapped dates, with the former now scheduled to be staged between February 16 and 17 and the latter being held on March 16 and 17.

Both events are scheduled for Iran's capital Tehran.

Host city applications for the 2019 Wrestling World Championships are currently being reviewed, UWW have said, with a selection due to be made by the end of the year.
