The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) World Poomsae Championships in Lima came to a close today with the First Lady of Peru, Nancy Lange Kuczynski, witnessing the action.

Today's competition in the Peruvian capital delivered a total of 10 gold medals to athletes from six different countries.

Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, South Korea, Australia, Turkey and the Philippines all claimed titles as competition concluded.

In the recognised poomsae male junior division team event, Chinese Taipei defeated Mexico for the gold, with Iran and the United States winning bronze medals.

Vietnam beat Turkey to gold in the women’s cadet division team competition, with Mexico and the US earning bronze for claiming the third step on the podium.

In the pairs cadet event, South Korea claimed gold over China and the US, with Mexico taking bronze.

Individual events saw Hee-do Kim of South Korea win gold in the men's under-65 division, whilst Chi Duong of the US won silver and Iran’s Ghorban Delshad and Great Britain’s Peter Johnson took bronze.

Australia’s Bronwyn Butterworth came out on top in the women’s under-65 division, after defeating the American Diana Hunt, with Marie France David from France and Catalina Hernandez-Ramos from Spain winning bronzes.

In the individual male junior competition, Ji-won Kim claimed South Korea’s third gold medal of the day ahead of Germany’s Shajan Sepanlou, with bronzes going to Turkey’s Muhammed Emir Yilmaz and American Alex Lee.

Turkey’s Elif Aybuke Yilmaz won gold in the individual female under-30s division, with Peru’s Marcela Castillo Tokumori coming second in front of her home crowd and Marjan Salahshouri from Iran and Claudia Cardenas from Ecuador both winning bronze.

In the individual female junior division, it was Chieh-ren Hsiao from Chinese Taipei who took the gold after defeating South Korea's Da-sol Kim.

American Rikki Jao and Mexico’s Sofia Sepulveda were left to claim the bronze medals.

In freestyle competition, Vietnam beat Turkey to win gold in the teams under-17 division, while Russia and the US both won bronze.

In the final event of the day, the individual males over-17s category, Jeordan Dominguez from The Philippines claimed gold ahead of Vietnam’s Dinh Khoi Nguyen.

Colombia’s Leandro Augusto Rodriguez, as well as Turkey’s Oguzhan Mustafa Ornek, claimed the two bronzes.

Currently not on the Olympic programme, poomsae is a non-sparring event where individuals or teams perform a "sequence of movements arranged in a meaningful order in response to attacks from multiple imaginary assailants". 

A total of 55 countries and 760 athletes took part in this year’s Championships - a record for the event - with South Korea finishing the competition top of the medals table.

Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards for recognised poomsae were won in the male category by South Korea's Kwang Ho Park, whilst Elif Aybuke Yilmaz of Turkey claimed the honour in the female category. 

It was the second year in a row in which Park has won the MVP award.

MVP awards for freestyle poomsae were also awarded, with Jeordan Dominguez from The Philippines and Anna Borysenko of Ukraine awarded the prizes in the male and female categories respectively.
