Registration has opened for the forthcoming Karate World Championships in Linz, the World Karate Federation (WKF) has announced.

National Federations have been invited by the governing body to begin registering their top athletes for the competition in Austria, which will take place from October 25 to 30.

Registration will be open until October 9, with the WKF claiming that national teams from across the world are already intensifying their preparations to ensure their athletes will be in peak condition for the competition.

Action is due to take place in the Tips Arena, with a concert scheduled for the Anton Bruckner University for Music on the day preceding the Championships.

Individual, team and disability sport elimination rounds are scheduled to be held between October 26 and 28.

The individual finals will take place on October 29, with the team events bringing the Championships to a conclusion the following day.

More than 900 athletes participated at the last World Championships, which were held in German city Bremen during 2014, with 116 nations represented.

Japan proved the most successful team on that occasion, ending with a tally of 10 medals from the event.

They were followed by France and Egypt, who secured eight and six medals respectively.

It will be the first World Championships to take place since the sport was added to the Olympic sport programme for Tokyo 2020.

Karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and baseball/softball were all proposed by organisers in the Japanese capital with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) then rubber-stamping the decision at their Session in Rio de Janeiro earlier this month.
