Egyptian judoka "sent home" after refusing to shake Israeli opponent's hand

The Egyptian judoka who refused to shake the hand of his Israeli opponent after their heavyweight bout at Rio 2016 has been sent home, according to reports.

Islam El Shehaby lost against Or Sasson and was told to leave by his own team - as well as being reprimanded by the International Olympic Committee.

El Shehaby, 32, said he did not want to shake hands with an Israeli for "personal reasons", nor was he obliged to do so under judo rules, it is claimed.

"Shaking the hand of your opponent is not an obligation written in the judo rules. It happens between friends and he's not my friend," El Shehaby reportedly said after the bout.

"But for personal reasons, you can't ask me to shake the hand of anyone from this State, especially in front of the whole world."

Perhaps he just went home following the conclusion of the judo competition. Just a thought.
