CAS rule three athletes out of Rio 2016 after positive drugs tests

The Anti-Doping Division (ADD) of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) have announced that Chinese swimmer Xinyi Chen has been provisionally suspended following a positive test for hydrochlorothiazide. Chen finished fourth in the final of the women’s 100m butterfly and had been due to compete in the 50m freestyle event, but did not start in this morning’s heats.

CAS have stated that "the athlete accepted a provisional suspension on a voluntary basis; as a consequence, the athlete is provisionally suspended from competing at the Olympic Games Rio 2016; the procedure will continue and the CAS ADD will issue a final award before the end of the Games."

Bulgarian 3,000M steeplechaser Silvia Danekova has also been declared ineligible to compete by the division, following a positive test for EPO. Her accreditation has been withdrawn, with the sanctioning of the runner now referred to the IAAF and CAS.

Poland’s Tomasz Zielinski, the European weightlifting champion in the men’s 94kg event, has been ruled out of the Games after a positive test for 19-Norandrosterone, a by-product of nandrolone. He had been due to compete tomorrow.
