Italy’s Aurora Tognetti won the women’s final at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) Youth A World Championships in Limerick, holding off a strong challenge from Russia’s Xeina Fralcova to take gold.

Tognetti accumulated a winning total of 1,064 points after coming ninth in the fencing with 20 wins and 15 defeats, fourth in the swimming with a time of 2 min 16.27sec, and second in the combined event in 12:34.00.

Fralcova finished four points off the pace despite winning the combined event in 12:23.00, while Egypt's Haydy Morsy was a further eight points back in third place. 

Germany’s Rebecca Langrehr just missed out on the podium, but she can take solace from the fact that she set a world record for youth fencing with 298 points - 32 wins and three defeats.

There are a total of 144 athletes from 23 nations competing at the University of Limerick in Ireland, where the format is tetrathlon - fencing, swimming and the combined event of running and shooting.

The men’s final is due to take place tomorrow, followed by the men's, women's and mixed relays on Monday (July 18).
