Spain’s Maialen Chourraut celebrated her daughter’s third birthday by claiming women’s K1 gold at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Slalom World Cup in La Seu d'Urgell.

The 33-year-old, who won Olympic bronze in the event at London 2012, was hoping to mirror the achievement of her compatriot Nuria Vilarrubla yesterday by winning on her home course.

Chourraut was able to achieve the feat by completing the course in a winning time of 1min 39.61sec to claim the third World Cup victory of her career.

Olympic silver medallist Jessica Fox claimed the silver medal as the Australian, the reigning world champion in the C1 event, clocked 1:41.73.

The podium was completed by Germany’s Ricarda Funk, who finished in a time of 1:43.71.

“I have had a tough week, I was so nervous,” said Chourraut.

“I am pleased to have won, it’s special to win in front of a home support.

“It was tough under the bridge, I practice there a lot but it's always difficult.”

France’s Pierre-Antoine Tillard and Edern Ruyet brought the World Cup to a close by delivering a superb display in the men’s C2 event.

The duo produced a faultless run down the Barcelona 1992 Olympic course to set a strong time of 1:39.53, which proved impossible for their rivals to beat.

Spain’s Daniel Marzo and Jesus Perez were the closest to dipping below the time, as the home favourites settled for second place in 1:42.07.

A time of 1:43.76 proved enough to Germany’s David Schroeder and Nico Bettge to earn the bronze medal.
