Luxembourg's Bob Jungels is the new leader of the Giro d'Italia after Giulio Ciccone soloed to victory on stage 10 today.

Twenty-three-year-old Jungels moved up to second in the overall classification after a good outing in the stage nine time trial on Sunday (May 15), and now takes over the famous Maglia Rosa jersey from his Etixx–Quick-Step team-mate Gianluca Brambilla.

Italian Brambilla's lead was only one second and he has now slipped to sixth overall after being dropped on the final climb of the 216km stage from Campi Bisenzio to Sestola.

Jungels finished in the pelton, two minutes and 15 seconds behind Italian Ciccone.

The Bardiani–CSF rider joined a 13-man escape group but then went it alone on the last of the day's four categorised climbs.

He could not be reeled in and eventually came home 42 seconds ahead of second placed Russian Ivan Rovny, riding for Tinkoff.

Ciccone clocked 5 hours 44min 32sec as Colombia's Darwin Atapuma, of BMC Racing, came third more than a minute adrift.

Movistar's Alejandro Valverde, one of the favourites for victory, finished in the pack although Team Sky's Mikel Landa abandoned the stage 150km from the end due to illness.

Jungels now has an overall time of 40:19:52, which is 26 seconds quicker than Costa Rica's Movistar rider Andrey Amador.

Spaniard Valverde, another Movistar rider, is 50 seconds back in third with LottoNL-Jumbo's Dutch cyclist Steven Kruijswijk fourth on the same time.

Italian hope Vincenzo Nibali, riding for Astana, lies in fifth place.

The Giro, one of cycling's Grand Tours, continues tomorrow with a 212km stage from Modena to Asolo.
