The German Olympic Sports Confederation’s (DOSB) German Sports Badge has been awarded to 345 primary school children by footballer Julian Brandt.

Otherwise known as the Deutsches Sportabzeichen, the German Sports Badge aims to promote increased involvement in sport by educating individuals on how they can improve their physical capabilities.

The Bayer Leverkusen star, part of the German team that won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2014, presented the accolade to pupils at GGS Herrenhauser Strasse - a primary school in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The 19-year-old right winger also played football with the children and signed autographs for them.

Headmistress Birgit Krohm congratulated the awardees and took the chance to ask Brandt some questions.

Brandt but is not the only prominent German athlete to have awarded the German Sports Badge to pupils of GGS Herrenhauser Strasse in recent years.

Former wrestler Alexander Leipold, a former world champion, has also undertaken the duty.

Jochen Wollmert, a three-time Paralympic gold medal-winning table tennis player, and Daniel Stephan, part of the German men’s handball team that won the Olympic silver medal at Athens 2004, are other notable names to have fulfilled the role.

Former footballer Erwin Kremers, a member of the West Germany team that won the 1972 UEFA European Football Championship, completes a famous quartet.
