Six-time Paralympic champion David Weir will be chasing a seventh Virgin London Marathon title in April after being announced in a seven-strong British team for the event.

Weir, set to compete in the British capital's showpiece 26.2 miles event for the 17th time, will be looking to go one better than his second-placed finish behind American Joshua George in 2015.

He last won the event, also the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Marathon World Cup, in 2012, the year he went on to claim four Paralympic gold medals at London 2012.

Another victory will therefore be a good omen ahead of Rio 2016.

The 36-year-old is scheduled to compete in the men's T53/54 event on April 24 just six days after he makes his debut at the Boston Marathon.

He will be joined in the team by John Smith, fresh from a 1hour 35min 56sec victory at the Dubai Marathon, and last year's 10th place finisher Simon Lawson.

Derek Rae, place at last year's IPC Athletics World Championships, a race held in conjunction with the London Marathon, will be looking to replicate his personal best performance of 2:40:40 as he returns to the capital in the T46 class.

Two-time champion Shelly Woods will lead the British team in the T54 women’s race alongside compatriot Jade Jones, hoping to return successfully from an injury-plagued 2015.

A time of 26min 53sec at the Gran Canaria 10km suggests she is returning to form at the right time.

“This will be great preparation for our athletes ahead of the IPC Athletics European Championships in June and the Paralympic Games in Rio just a few months later," said British Paralympic head coach Paula Dunn.

“2016 is a huge year for the sport and we will be looking to get off to a strong start at the IPC Athletics Marathon World Cup in London.”
