IJsbrand Chardon earned his first International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Driving World Cup Final title since 2006 after beating Australian favourite Boyd Exell in Bordeaux.

The Netherlands’ Chardon had begun the day in second position behind his compatriot Koos de Ronde, with the top three riders after the first round due to advance into the winning round of the event.

It came as no surprise that the two Dutchmen and six-time winner Exell secured the podium places, having opened a clear gap over Switzerland’s Jérôme Voutaz after the first day of the competition.

Exell, who had won five of the seven qualification events, had moved from third position to the top of the standings to secure him the advantage of driving last in the winning round.

After De Ronde scored an overall total of 267,67 his challenge faded, while Chardon was able to produce a fast round to finish the competition with an impressive total of 250.09.

It placed all the pressure on Exell to retain his title, but the Australian knocked down an obstacle in the early stages to dent his prospects of victory.

The mistake proved costly as he would end with a total of 254.73, which only allowed him to finish second behind Chardon.

“I have won in Stockholm and London Olympia this year, so I knew that it was possible to beat Boyd," said Chardon afterwards.

“The team of horses that I have are very good and after I tried different set-ups I decided after my win in London that this would be my team for the final."

Following the final, it was confirmed that the 2017 edition of the event will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, rather than Bordeaux.

However, the French venue was confirmed to be hosting a World Cup leg during the year.
