Holders Brazil have advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s and women’s team competitions at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Latin American Championships in San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Their men’s team had finished top of the Group A standings after winning both of their matches yesterday to set up a last eight tie against Mexico, who finished second in Group B.

Hugo Calderano, Eric Jouti and Vitor Ishiy were able to brush aside the Mexican challenge by winning 3-1, although their one loss was the first the team had suffered at this year’s competition.

Having ended the challenge of the third seeds, Brazil will now face the fourth seeded Chilean team for a place in the final, after they overcame Venezuela 3-2.

The host nation, though, saw their hopes come to an end as Ecuador were able to battle to a 3-2 victory in a thrilling tie.

Alberto Miño proved to be the star member of the team as he claimed an 11-7, 11-1, 11-9 victory over Mexico’s Daniel Gonzalez, before beating Hector Berrios 11-6, 11-7, 11-5.

The narrow victory was sealed by Rodrigo Tapia as he earned an 11-7, 11-9, 1-11, 11-9 win over Brian Afanador.

“He should win, I just played my game and I tried to use my forehand as early as I could in the rallies,” said Tapia.

“I focused on serving short and then directing my first top spin towards his forehand.

“Alberto always wins too, it is just a great feeling today that I’ve been able to support him.”

After seeing off the host nation, Ecuador will meet an Argentinian team who are fresh from a 3-1 win over Peru.

Defending champions Brazil and hosts Puerto Rico had ensured their progression to the semi-finals of the women’s competition after finishing top of their respective groups, with both then being granted a bye.

Chile earned the right to face the Brazilian team after overcoming Argentina 3-1, while Venezuela battled to a 3-2 win over Colombia to set up a match with Puerto Rico.

The team competitions are both due to come to a close tomorrow, with the first round of the singles events then scheduled to get underway.
