Controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios stunned world number two Andy Murray as Australia Green clinched a 2-1 victory over Britain on a dramatic day of action at the Hopman Cup in Perth today.

Kyrgios, given a suspended 28-day ban for comments he made about Stanislas Wawrinka’s girlfriend during a Rogers Cup match in August, set the perfect platform for his country as he earned his first-ever win over the Briton.

The 20-year-old, considered one of the rising talents in Australia, broke Murray in the third game of the match before going on to seal the first set 6-4.

Two-times Grand Slam winner Murray crucially squandered a set point at 5-4 in the second, which handed Kyrgios the momentum and the Australian then closed out the match on a tie-break to give his team a 1-0 advantage in the tie.

Britain’s Heather Watson managed to square the contest at 1-1 as she fought back from a set down to beat Daria Gavrilova 6-7, 6-2, 7-5.

The world number 55 demonstrated her battling qualities and banished her first-set demons with a superb display to send the contest into a deciding mixed doubles rubber.

Kyrgios and Gavrilova harnessed the support of the crowd as they raced into the lead by securing the opening set 6-2, but again Britain kept themselves in the match as Watson and Murray won the second 7-6.

The Australian duo then proved they are made of stern mettle as they took the decider 11-9 to claim an overall success which maintains their unbeaten record in the tournament so far.

“I actually did promise a couple of my friends that next time I played Andy, I was going to beat him,” Kyrgios said.

“He’s just a great player and today I knew what my game plan was going to be and how he was going to play.”

In the day’s other Group B tie, Germany recovered from defeat in the opening singles rubber to claim a 2-1 victory over France, who had lost their opener to Britain.

Caroline Garcia got France off to the best possible start as she overcame the challenge of world number 30 Sabine Lisicki with a 6-2, 7-6 win, before Alexander Zverev restored parity for the Germans, beating Kenny De Schepper 6-2, 6-2.

His success ensured the tie would go down to the mixed doubles match and Lisicki and Zverev struck first by winning the opening set 6-4.

The French team rallied in the second by winning the tie-breaker, but the German duo held their nerve as they took the third 10-6 to seal a dramatic triumph.

It has also been confirmed that women’s world number one Serena Williams has pulled out of the tournament after she sustained an injury during her match with Australia’s Jarmila Wolfe yesterday.

The 34-year-old, winner of 21 Grand Slam titles in her career to date, will now not compete in the United States’ final match with the Czech Republic tomorrow and she has been replaced by Vicky Duval.

Only the winners of the two groups will progress to the final.
