Australia’s Mat Belcher and Will Ryan won the men’s 470 medal race at the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi to complete the successful defence of their title.

The pair came home a second faster than the young Spanish pairing of Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp to finish ahead of Sweden's Anton Dahlberg and Fredrik Bergström, who had to settle for the runners-up spot on the last day of the regatta, and the United States' Stuart McNay and David Hughes, bronze medallists after taking sixth place.

The result underlines their position as firm favourites to strike gold at next year's Olympics Games in Rio de Janeiro and adds to Belcher's haul of six world titles, three of which have been won alongside Ryan.

"It's been a long week with difficult conditions to sail in, but it's been great to race in the morning," said Belcher.

"We have had some tough competition and there hasn't been much rest since the worlds.

"We knew everyone was in top form and highly motivated so we are happy to get the win."

Victory also enhanced the reputation of Belcher and Ryan's Ukrainian-born coach, Victor Kovalenko, known as "The Medal Maker", who has mentored the winners of nine Olympic medals, including six golds, and 18 world titles.

Meanwhile, in the women’s 470 medal race, Great Britain’s Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark finished in third position to beat defending champions Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar of Austria to the gold medal.

Vadlau and Ogar were second on the day in a race won by Japan’s Akiyo Yamaguchi and Eri Hatayama, whose compatriots Ai Kondo Yoshida and Miho Yoshioka came away with bronze.

Austria did not have to settle for second best in the 49er however as Nico Delle-Karth and Nikolaus Resch won the medal race following back-to-back race victories yesterday to land the gold with six points to spare over Italy’s Stefano Cherin and Andrea Tesei.

Finishing second on the day, just ahead of Cherin and Tesei, was France’s Gabriel Skoczek and Yann Rocherieux, who won bronze.

A fourth-place finish in the Finn medal race saw Croatia's Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic clinch gold, while Turkey's Alican Kaynar came third to claim silver and Spain’s Pablo Guitian Sarria triumphed on the day to take bronze.

Australia’s Tom Burton was always in control in the Laser, taking third place in the medal race to comfortably secure gold ahead of Cyprus’ Pavlos Kontides, the winner on the day, and fellow countryman Matthew Wearn, whose closing sixth-place finish was enough to secure bronze.

Sweden's Josefin Olsson trailed The Netherlands’ Marit Bouwmeester by a single point going into the Laser Radial medal race but overturned the deficit by finishing fourth on the day, with Bouwmeester slipping to eighth for silver and Denmark’s Anne-Marie Rindom crossing the line first to claim bronze.

The men's RS:X was another event which produced a last-day turnaround as Spain's Ivan Pastor Lafuente took victory in the medal race to snatch gold from Brazil's Ricardo Santos, the overnight leader, who slumped to seventh on the day for silver ahead of bronze medallist Tom Squires of Britain.

Squires’ compatriot Bryony Shaw successfully defended her crown in the RS:X women's class, winning the medal race for her seventh victory out of 10, with second place on the day giving Italy's Flavia Tartaglini the silver medal and third spot proving enough to secure bronze for Brazil’s Patricia Freitas.

Britain's Oliver Bridge rounded off the competition by winning the decisive open kiteboarding medal race to retain his title, while the silver and bronze medals went to Spain's Florian Trittel and Alejandro Climent Hernandez respectively.

Attention now turns to the start of the 2016 ISAF World Cup series, due to start in Melbourne next month.
