Iranian wrestlers at the double to take men's team title at Asian Wrestling Championships

The Iranian men’s freestyle team clinched two gold medals to surge to the top of the rankings at the Asian Wrestling Championships at the Aspire Dome in Doha.

The excellent result for the men saw them finish on a total of 68 points, while Japan claimed a total of 60 to take second.

Kyrgyzstan, who managed to top the podium in one weight category, were third, although they were 14 points adrift of the dominant winners.

Peyman Yarahmadi was one of the star performers for Iran as the world number nine took the 74 kilograms title with a commanding 8-2 victory over Japan’s Daisuke Shimada, in which he managed to secure back-to-back take-downs in the second period.

On a fascinating day of action in the Qatari capital, Mohammadhossein Mohammadian also sealed gold for Iran with a superb 10-3 success against Magomed Musaev of Kyrgyzstan in their 97kg bout.

Mohammadian was all over his opponent almost from the beginning of the contest, proving too strong for the Kyrgyz competitor in all areas as he cruised to his nation’s second title of the day.

Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazkahstan clinched the opening medal as he denied Iran another victory by beating Behnam Ehsanpoor in what was a tight under 61kg match-up.

There was more success for Asian Games champion Bekzod Abdurakhmanov of Uzbekistan, who won the 70kg gold with a thrilling win against Tajikistan’s Zelimkhan Yusupov, who is currently the world number four.

The contest was one of the most enthralling of the day with both wrestlers eager to seal the title but it was Abdurakhmanov who was on the right side of a 6-4 scoreline.

Elsewhere, in the only women’s final to take place, Yuki Irie of Japan followed in compatriot Kaori Icho’s footsteps as she produced an excellent come from behind performance to beat Vinesh Vinesh of India in the 48kg gold medal contest.

The women return to full action tomorrow with gold medals available in the under 53kg, 55kg, 60kg, 63kg and 69kg weight categories.
