Bjøergen first achieved the feat in the 2004-2005 season, with only Virpi Kuitunen of Finland and Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk the only other women to win the sprint, distance and overall World Cup titles in the same year.

The 34-year-old from Trondheim had already secured the sprint title ahead of today's 30 kilometes event and broke away from the field with compatriots Therese Johaug and Astrid Jacobsen, as well as Sweden's Charlottle Kalla.

As the pace remained high, Jacobsen and Kalla slipped out of contention and Bjøergen made her bid for the last win of the season on the final climb, outsprinting Johaug to the line.

Bjøergen finished in 1 hour 14min 10.5sec, while Johaug claimed second in 1:14:22 and the Norwegian clean sweep was completed by Jacobsen in 1:14:55.

"I knew that I had a strong finish and relied on that," Bjøergen, who also became the first woman to win the race in consecutive years, said.

"It is great to end the season with the victory."

Norway's strength in depth in women's cross-country skiing was highlighted by the top six in the overall World Cup standings all coming from the country.

Bjøergen claimed the title with 2,172 points, while Johaug,a  triple gold medallist at last month's Nordic World Ski Championships, was the runner-up with 1,388.

Heidi Weng ended the season third on 1,332 points.

The podium was replicated in the overall distance standings, which Bjøergen won with 962 points.
