The Swiss company has backed the DOSB since 2000, providing an exclusive package which includes protection for accident, liability, legal expenses, equipment, valuables and shipping.

This has already benefited over 5,000 athletes and officials, it is claimed.

The stepping up of this collaboration, marked by a ceremony in Wiesbaden, means that more extensive support will be provided across German sport, while generating more exposure for the company in a key European market.

"Zurich with its commitment for many years is a reliable companion for us and our athletes on the Olympic team by being the official insurer," said DOSB chief executive Michael Vesper.

"I am pleased that we maintain a trustful partnership."

This comes at a key time for German sport, as the nation attempts to build on sixth place on the medals table, with 11 golds among a 44 medal haul, at London 2012, as well as perform strongly at the inaugural European Games in Baku in June.

The DOSB is also in the midst of selecting either Berlin or Hamburg as its contender in the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic race, with a decision due to be announced on March 21.

"We are pleased that we have our long-standing partnership with the German Olympic Sports Confederation now extend and consolidate as an official 'Olympic partner'', added Zurich Insurance Germany chief executive Ralph Brand.

"We are insurers and partner of the German Olympic team for many years.

"As an official Olympic Partner we are going to support the Olympic sports in Germany as a whole.

"Promoting exercise is an important part of our business philosophy."
