JULY 10 - BRITISH SWIMMERS have won their first gold medal at the World Youth Championships in Monterrey, Mexico, today thanks to Daniel Sliwinski (pictured).

 

The 18-year-old from Bolton won the 100 metres breaststroke in 1min 02.19sec, breaking the previous British long course record for his age group, and creating a new World Youth championship record.

 

He finished 0.37sec in front of Germany's Marco Koch, and 0.38 ahead of Serbia's Caba Siladji who battled for silver and bronze with Koch just stealing Silver.

 

The men's 200m freestyle witnessed more British talent, with Robert Bale, 18, claiming Silver after finishing in 1.49.44, just ahead of Germany's Lucien Hassdenteufel, but two seconds behind the Russian Gold Medallist Danila Izotov.

 

Chris Walker-Hebborn, also 18, achieved bronze in the100m backstroke after qualifying eighth in the semi-finals.

 

His final time of 56.04 put him just 0.15 ahead of South Africa's fourth placed Darren Murray, and fractions ahead of the remaining finalists.

 

Gold went to the New Zealand swimmer Daniel Bell, who finished in 55.32.
