May 26 - Getting young people involved will be a key goal for the London 2012 as they plan the route of the Olympic Torch Relay.

In keeping with tradition the flame will be lit on Mount Olympus, in Greece, before being transported to the UK where it will arrive on May 18, 2012.

For the next 70 days a total of 8,000 torch bearers will help the flame around the UK before reaching its final destination, London, the weekend before the 2012 Games begin on July 27.

London 2012 is committed to ensuring that at least 50 per cent, or 4,000 torch bearers, will be under the age of 24 with applicants picked as a result of a nomination process which begins next year.

The flame will only travel within the UK and not internationally, ensuring there is no repeat of the ugly scenes which accompanied the international part of the Beijing Torch Relay in 2008 when it was the subject of pro-Tibet protesters.

Although the flame route will not be announced until next year organisers want 95 per cent of the British population to be within a one hour journey of seeing the flame.

Sebastian Coe, the chairman of London 2012, said he hoped the Torch Relay would inspire the UK.

"I'm really excited because it's the first it's the first invitation for young people to get involved," he said.

Coe said London 2012 would be looking for nominations from young people and from young people who have inspired young people.

He stressed this was across all sectors of society and not just sport.

"Sport is only one of eight or nine categories," he said.

"I want people who have contributed and who have achieved.

"I want this to focus on young people."

Hugh Robertson, the new Sports and Olympics Minister, believes the flame gives communities a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get involved.

"I think local authorities will realise this is an incredible opportunity to do something," he said.

Coe, who has previously participated in three Olympic Torch Relays, admitted, if nominated to be one of the bearers, he would jump at the chance to take part.

"I would be honoured to run in it," he said.
