The Canadian side had to come from 14-0 behind to reach their first semi-final since the Tokyo Sevens in 2000, eventually beating France 17-14 with Connor Braid scoring two tries before Nanyak Dala snatched the win.

The Canadians narrowly beat Wales 21-19 in their final pool A match to progress to the quarters and will now have a tough task against Sevens World Series leaders New Zealand in the semi-finals following their 24-7 victory over England.

South Africa conceded their first points of the USA Sevens in their 19-7 victory against Kenya in the final group match of pool A.

The defending champions continued their dominance in the quarter-finals where they hammered Argentina 36-0 to set up a semi-final tie against Samoa, who came from 10-0 behind to edge past Australia 12-10 in their quarter-final match-up.

After being nudged out of a place in the Cup following defeat to South Africa, Kenya ensured a clean passage to the Bowl semi-finals with an impressive 24-0 win over strugglers Spain.

The Kenyans will face Scotland in the semis following their 31-7 victory over Portugal – a first win for the Scots in this year's competition.

Hosts United States began day two brightly with a victory over Spain in their final pool D match.

Their pursuit of a Bowl semi-final was cut short by Wales however, as the Welsh team recorded a 12-7 win at the Sam Boyd Stadium to book their place in the next round.

They will face Fiji in the semis, who thrashed winless Uruguay 38-14 in their quarter-final match.

The final day of competition tomorrow will see all Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield semi-finals take place followed by the finals.

The Plate sees England take on France and Argentina up against Australia, while the US and Uruguay, and Spain and Portugal will face off in the Shield.
