Head coach Amanda Partington said the "team culture and committed attitudes of the group" have helped the 16, who are a mix of young and experienced players, secure their place.

The squad features just two players who competed, and scored, at Delhi 2010 - midfielder Abi Welsford and defender Leah Wilkinson - when the team came fourth of five in their pool and won just one game, against Malaysia.

Highlighting the youth in the squad, midfielders Beth Bingham and Danielle Jordan, and forward Eloise Laity, have all recently earned their first caps for Wales.

Defender Xenna Hughes, the daughter of Stoke City manager and former Manchester United and Barcelona striker Mark Hughes, makes the squad after an impressive season with her club University of Birmingham.

"Great credit must be given to every player involved in the Performance Training Squad (PTS) for raising standards this year and making this final selection for the Commonwealth Games incredibly hard," said Partington.

"Looking forwards to the Commonwealth Games, this event gives 16 players from our PTS an opportunity to compete at the highest level possible for Wales, and supports their ongoing development and our aspirations."

Also in the squad of 16, cut down from an original group of 24, are defenders Ria Male, Elie Barnes, Jo Westwood and Kat Budd.

The midfield has Alys Brooks, Carys Tucker, Sarah Jones and Sian French, with forwards Emma Batten and Phoebe Richards also picked.

Chris Jenkins, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales, said: "The Delhi 2010 Games ended a 12-year absence at a Commonwealth Games for Wales' women's hockey team and so we're delighted to be able to select another strong squad to compete for Team Wales at Glasgow 2014.

"The team sport competitions always add such excitement to the programme and I'm looking forward to seeing the team play in just a few months' time."
