August 19 - 2014 Hockey World Cup mascot Stockey takes a ride on the official tramStockey the stork has been unveiled as the official mascot of the 2014 International Hockey Federation (FIH) Rabobank Hockey World Cup, which takes place in The Hague from May 31 to June 15.

The big bird was unveiled at the Kyocera Stadium, which will play host to all 76 matches during next year's tournament, and was given a guided tour of the arena which is home to professional football club ADO Den Haag, before taking a ride on the official World Cup tram which will become part of the regular service in the city.

Stockey was welcomed by The Hague alderman Karsten Klein, who is responsible for sport, youth and welfare, along with Dutch international hockey players Bob de Voogd and Naomi van As as well as ADO Den Haag's official mascot Storky.

"We are proud such a great event as the Hockey World Cup is coming to The Hague," Klein said.

"The Hague will be the hockey capital of the world for a few weeks and that is something to celebrate, not just inside the stadium, but outside with everyone from the city itself.

"It's fantastic that Stockey has come to lend a hand.

"His cousin Storky has stolen our hearts - he was even given an official commendation last month.

"And having two storks in the Kyocera Stadium can only bring extra luck for all the participants."

This will be the third time that the Hockey World Cup will be staged in the Netherlands following tournaments in Amstelveen in 1973 and Utrecht in 1998, and the hosts will be hoping that they can make it three wins out of three on home soil in the men's competition, while the Dutch women will be looking to better their runners-up spot in Rosario in 2010 after they went down 3-1 to hosts Argentina.

Next year will see both the men's and women's World Cups held simultaneously for only the second time, with the only previous occasion coming the last time the Netherlands hosted a World Cup in 1998.

Stockey will have a busy schedule over the coming year as he attends matches, clinics and other events around the Netherlands as preparations for the two-week long tournament, featuring 12 men's and 12 women's teams, continue to take flight.
