The Colombian will undergo surgery tomorrow after suffering a displaced fracture to his right scapula.

His Movistar team said he was taken to a medical centre after today's crash on stage 11, from Pamplona to Santuario de San Miguel de Aralar.

Quintana was one of a number of riders to fall within the first 20 kilometres of the 153.4km stage.

It is not clear what caused the crashed, but reports suggest a media motorbike may have been caught up in the incident.

Spaniard Alberto Contador, who assumed the lead of the general classification from Quintana after his dramatic fall on stage 10 yesterday, has held on to his advantage at the head of the field.

Today's stage was won by Italian Fabio Aru, who timed his sprint perfectly.

He made a break with just under two kilometres to go and the Astana rider never looked back.

Aru won by six seconds from Contador and Alejandro Valverde.

Tinkoff-Saxo rider Contador leads countryman Valverde, who rides for Movistar, in the general classification by 20 seconds.

Colombian Rigoberto Uran, who rides for Omega Pharama-QuickStep, is third, more than a minute back.
