The event, part of the Mayor of London's festival of cycling, will take place on August 10 and, due to the success of the inaugural event in 2013, will have an increased field of around 50 per cent.

This will give more than 24,000 cyclists the opportunity to challenge themselves across the 100-mile course, starting in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park before making its way through Surrey and then back around some of London's most notable landmarks.

"Even with the 50 per cent increase in riders, we know tens of thousands will be very disappointed not to get a place through the ballot but there are still other ways to get in," said Hugh Brasher, event director for Prudential RideLondon.

"Many charities, including Bliss, our first Charity of the Year, still have places available in the main event.

"Entries for the Prudential RideLondon Business Relay, where teams of four cycle approximately 25 miles each, open on Monday 10 February."

The Business Relay is open to teams of four riders (four men, four women or a mixed team of two men and two women) from the same organisation.

In its first year, Prudential RideLondon won five national awards and raised a record-breaking £7 million ($11.3 million/€8.4 million) for charity, a record for a one-day cycling event.

This year saw the introduction of the Charity of the Year, with Bliss, the special care baby charity, chosen for the honour.
