Invited by the Pakistan Boxing Federation, Khan was impressed, saying "this is a big event and I'm happy to have witnessed it".

"It will also help promote boxing in Pakistan," added the former WBA/IBF junior welterweight champion.

"People are crazy about cricket here but there is a lot of talent when it comes to boxing.

"It needs a lot of support and I'm here to give it whatever it needs.

"I'm sure in a few years, Pakistan will become a tough country when it comes to amateur boxing."

Khan's younger brother Haroon was competing in the Championship and lost to Indian fighter Madan Lal, who went on to be beaten by home favourite Muhammad Waseem in the semi-finals on Wednesday..

Talking to the BBC, Khan said of a potential fight in the country that "it could definitely happen".

"There is so much support we have here," said Khan, the 2004 Olympic silver medallist.

"Muhammad Ali did it in so many countries.

"In the Philippines he did it in Manila, he did it all over the place so why can't we do it here in Pakistan?"
