AIBA says it has received an apology from the IOA led by N Ramachandran (pictured) after ill informed comments by its secretary general Rajeev Mehta ©Getty Images The International Boxing Association (AIBA) says it has received an apology from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) following comments by secretary general Rajeev Mehta, who said the IOA had not been consulted regarding the formation of a new boxing body in India.

Mehta had claimed he was surprised by the decision of AIBA to grant provisional approval to Boxing India as the new governing body without first getting the go-ahead from the IOA.

"I have not got any official communication from the AIBA regarding this," Mehta reportedly told PTI in India.

"Nor my President (N Ramachandran) has got any communication."

Mehta's comments came two days after AIBA announced it had accepted Boxing India as the new governing body following a meeting of the AIBA Executive Committee, and had been provisionally added as an AIBA member until it is officially ratified by the governing body's Congress.

When making the announcement, AIBA released a letter which had been reportedly sent to the IOA President, Ramachandran, from AIBA President C K Wu, outlining the decision.

However, following Mehta's remarks, AIBA has today moved to clarify the situation in a statement which described Mehta as "ill-informed" and which says the IOA has confirmed receipt of the letter.

It said Wu and Ramachandran met in Lausanne to discuss "issues relating to boxing in India" at which AIBA received IOA support for the selection of Boxing India.

It adds: "Further to this agreement, AIBA immediately informed the IOA of the AIBA Executive Committee decision of May 14 to accept Boxing India as the new National Federation.

"This decision was simultaneously published on the AIBA website.

"The IOA recently confirmed receipt of such a letter and apologised towards AIBA for the misunderstanding created.

"AIBA wishes to continue working with the IOA and sincerely hopes that this matter has now been cleared and settled."

Once it receives formal ratification, Boxing India will take over from the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) as the controlling body for the sport after it was suspended by AIBA in December 2012 when its then chairman, Abhay Singh Chautala, was controversially elected President of the IOA.

AIBA cut off all ties with the IABF in March making the body effectively defunct.

The IOA had already been suspended by the International Olympic Committee for not holding their elections under the Olympic Charter, and was only reinstated in February.
