Richard Toth overcame Turkey's Adem Furkan Avci in one of the biggest surprises on day nine of the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships ©AIBAApril 22 - Hungary's Richard Toth completed the surprise of the day in Sofia today as he beat European junior continental champion Adem Furkan Avci of Turkey in one of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Youth World Boxing Championships' first ever "box offs".

The "box off" is a new concept introduced this year by the AIBA which gives defeated quarter-finalists a second opportunity to qualify for the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing later this year.

Hungary's Youth National Champion and Julius Torma Memorial Tournament winner had succumbed to an agonisingly close loss to Ukrainian Viktor Petrov in the light welterweight quarter-finals, however, the youngster, who does not turn 18 until October, bounced back to beat his top Turkish opponent and book a spot in China in August.

After a surprise quarter-final defeat yesterday, Sweden's defending AIBA youth world champion and former AIBA junior world champion Agnes Alexiusson proved she is still one of the best female fighters in the lightweight division as she defeated Hungary's 17-year-old newcomer Daniella Posta.

"I thought it would be strange to fight again after my unsuccessful quarter-final in the championships, but after my first emotions I was happy to get another chance, so I was so excited to fight today," said Alexiusson.

"I was pretty nervous before the contest because I knew this is my last chance to qualify to the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics.

"When I entered the ring these feelings disappeared and I felt myself focused and confident.

"I am happy that I could win this bout against the Hungarian girl who was strong in the fights."

One of the best bouts of the day in Sofia's Armeec Arena came through the men's light flyweight contest between Japan's Subaru Murata and Venezuela's Yoel Segundo Finol.

The two boxers began the bout in full flow as they each showed excellent combinations and strength to provide an intriguing spectacle for the on looking fans.

It was the 17-year-old from Japan who really stepped through the gears in the second round however, as he began attacking with a greater ferocity and landing a succession of deadly blows.

Murata continued to impress until the final bell and was awarded a unanimous victory by the judges to secure a place in Nanjing.

Chinese Taipei fighters shined brightly on this ninth day of action in Sofia as Huang Hsiao Wen and Wu Pei Yi succeeded in beating two of the favourites to progress to Nanjing later this year.

Huang's victory came against Britain's European Women's Junior Championship gold medallist Crystal Barker, the last remaining female Briton in the competition, in the women's flyweight division.

Despite an uneasy second round, the 17-year-old Asian boxer used her reach well and edged to a split decision victory to provide further disappointment for the Briton.

After a slow start, Wu managed to turn her lightweight bout on its head as she got the better of Ireland's AIBA junior world champion, and AIBA Junior Female Boxer of the Year 2013 Ciara Ginty.
