Mo_Farah_wins_New_York_City_half_marathon_March_20_2011March 20 - Mo Farah's first experience of life in New York hugely agreed with him today as he made his half marathon debut in the Big Apple, winning in a British record of 60min 23sec.

The 27-year-old, who re-located to the United States earlier this month to team up with three-times New York marathon winner Alberto Salazar, outsprinted Ethiopia's Gebre Gebremariam in a tight finish, winning by two seconds and claiming the top prize of $20,000 (£12,000) for finishing ahead of a field of more than 10,000 runners.

Farah, who defended his European indoor 3,000 metres crown in Paris two weeks ago, commented: "It was a great race."

Farah spent much of the race working in tandem with his new training partner Galen Rupp.

He said: "Me and Galen worked together but it came down to a sprint finish. The crowd made a big difference and it was really exciting.

"We knew Gebremariam had a big finish so we worked hard but we still could not get rid of him. I felt all right with 400m to go and just went for it.

"Alberto is a great coach and training had been going so well so we knew I was in good shape, but in the race it was just a case of following everyone else."

In the women's race, Kenya's Caroline Rotich set a new course record with victory in 68:52, eclipsing the previous best of 69:25 set by Great Britain's Mara Yamauchi in 2010.
