September 11 - Poland have topped the final medal table at the prestigious 2010 International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) World Junior Games in the picturesque city of Olomouc in the Czech Republic as they picked up an impressive haul of 65 medals, which included 32 golds, 25 silvers and eight bronzes.

Germany followed Poland by finishing second with a total of 44 medals, 22 of which were gold, while Britain took third place with 42 medals, 21 of them gold.

The event, which was attended by IWAS President Paul DePace and Mayor of the City of Olomouc Martin Novotny, is for disabled competitors under the age of 23-years-old who participate in the sports of athletics and swimming.

With many of the top athletes expected to go on to become Paralympic stars of the future, the IWAS World Junior Games are one of the biggest disability sports events on the calendar and IWAS claimed that they were delighted with how the five day competition went.

An IWAS statement said: "Now that the IWAS World Junior Games have finished, IWAS wants to take this opportunity to not only congratulate our member nations that took part in the event but to also offer our appreciation to the local organising committee at the Atleticky Klub, Olomouc and all their volunteers that’s helped the Games to be such a remarkable success that it was.

"Obviously this is an impressive result for these countries but there were remarkable results from so many of the up and coming Paralympic athletes of future.

"As a federation that follows the ethos or providing a pathway for grass roots athletes we are proud of all the accomplishments achieved at the IWAS Junior World Games 2010 and we wish to offer our ever continuing support and encouragement to the athletes that attended."
