Marble Arch_Sochi_2014October 27 - Sochi 2014 have promised to revise their controversial plans to build an ice rink here in the heart of London during next year's Olympics after their original proposal was rejected.

The plan to put the rink at Marble Arch in central London at the entrace of Hyde Park, accommodationg up to 8,000 people a day, were thrown out by Westminster Council after they received several objections.

Transport for London's (TfL) claimed the rink would cause "traffic congestion" at Marble Arch, part of the dedicated Olympic network, while the Metropolitan Police claimed the area would be needed as an evacuation area in case of an emergency in Hyde Park, which is hosting the triathlon and open water swimming during the Games, as well as being a live site.

The Police also warned that the venue was ill-prepared against a terrorist attack.

English Heritage, meanwhile, objected as it would have blocked views of the Grade I-listed Arch and Westminster Council said the structure would be "excessive and harmful to the site's open character".

The decision is set to be ratified at a planning meeting next Thursday (November 3).

"The Council's officers have recommended to the Planning Committee that this particular planning application should be refused," Westminster Council director Rosemarie MacQueen said in a statement.

"The impact of additional visitors and vehicles on the local infrastructure, including the Olympic Route Network which encompasses the entire site, will lead to overcrowding and congestion and will not be safe."

Under the proposal, Sochi would have taken over the site from May to October.

Sochi are refusing to give up on their plans which involve Russian figure-skating stars will giving master classes to youngsters and an interactive visitor experience and a hospitality pavilion, housed in custom-designed structures.

"Following dialogue between ourselves, Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police, we respectfully acknowledge the recommendations made regarding the plans for Sochi.Centre," said Sochi 2014 in a statement.

"We understand the concerns that have been raised and have always looked to ensure the considerations, safety and enjoyment of both Sochi.

"Centre visitors and local people are at the forefront of our minds.

"We are now working to revise our plans, in close partnership with all stakeholders, and address the concerns that have been raised.

"Our aim remains to showcase Sochi 2014 at an innovative and imaginative venue during London 2012, while ensuring the needs of Games visitors and local people are fully met."
