David_Beckahm_at_Olympic_Park_November_2010November 29 - David Beckham has today visited the Olympic Park being built for London 2012 for the first time.

The Los Angeles Galaxy star and former England captain was shown around the site by Sebastian Coe, chairman of London 2012.

He dropped in on his way to Zurich, where he will be one of the leading ambassadors for England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup, which will be announced on Thursday (December 2).

Beckham played a similar high profile role in the successful bid to bring the Olympics and Paralympics to London as an ambassador and was part of the bidding delegation which travelled to Singapore.

He was also part of the London 2012 handover performance, which was part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games closing ceremony.

Beckham said: "I think the Olympic Park is incredible and I am delighted that I have been involved from the very beginning.

"The area I know so well is being transformed, the amazing dream is becoming a reality and I have seen first-hand how much hard work has gone into the project.

"This is great for the East End and for sport."

Coe said: "David has been, and continues to be, an integral part of the London 2012 family, playing a key role in the bid and being part of our handover show in Beijing.

"I was delighted to be able to show him around the site, which of course is in a part of London he knows well.

"His belief and support is well known and he was thrilled to see the progress being made."
