August 11 - British Paralympic champion Sam Hynd (pictured) has been forced to sit out of next week’s International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven after failing to recover from a neck injury.

The 19-year-old from Mansfield won his Paralympic gold medal in impressive fashion by dominating the 400 metres freestyle at the Beijing 2008 Games.

But Hynd, who was due to compete in four events in Eindhoven, will not fly to the Netherlands because the neck injury forced him to miss training and the decision was made that he should withdraw from the event.

The teenager will remain in the UK to work with medical staff as he continues his rehabilitation from injury and British Swimming's performance director John Atkinson expressed his sorrow at the loss of a key member of the team.

Atkinson said: "We are all disappointed for Sam but I know that he will have the right support at home to help him continue his recovery.

"I believe that following his rehab work he will return ready for the start of next year's season earlier and ready for training."

The World Championships begin on Sunday (August 15) and Britain are sending a team of 29 swimmers to the eight-day competition with double Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds set to lead the British medal charge.
