July 12 - Ireland today announced the eight swimmers who will make up the Irish team at the 2010 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven next month.

Led by Dave Malone, the Head of Paralympic Swimming, the team features some of the top disability swimmers in the world, including Beijing 2008 Paralympic finalist Ellen Keane (pictured).

Keane, who swims in the S9 disability category, will be joined by Matthew Bell in the S14, Stephen Campbell S11, Jonathan Cummings S6, James Hamilton S14, Gina Lourens S8, Jonathan McGrath S8 and James Scully S5.

The Championships, which are due to take place between August 15 and 25 at the magnificent Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, are held once every four years and are the biggest event on the swimming calendar aside from the Paralympic Games.

Malone said: "I have been working with the athletes for towards the World Championships since my appointment as Head of Paralympic Swimming over a year ago.

"They have worked very hard over the last year and this is a group of very talented performers.

"Eindhoven is the perfect showcase opportunity for them to display their talent."

Liam Harbison, the chief executive of the Paralympic Council of Ireland (PCI), added: "The World Championships is another milestone for our swimmers on the road to London 2012.

"After their success last year in the European Championships, we are very hopeful they will build on this success and we wish them every success."

The Irish team support staff consists of Malone, head coach James Laverty, coach Sandra Cole, team physiologist Antonia Rossiter and team physiotherapist Fintan O’Donnell.
