The International Centre for Sport Security says its new head office in Europe will enhance its fight against corruption ©ICSSThe International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS) is opening a head office in Europe next month.

Emanuel Macedo de Medeiros, who in March stepped down as head of the European Professional Football Leagues after nine years, will run the ICSS Europe as chief executive.

The location of the head office is not being revealed until later in the year, but is somewhere "of strategic importance to the ICSS".

The not-for-profit organisation, which has its headquarters in the Qatari capital Doha, has a number of European partners in the field of sport safety, security and integrity.

They include the European Professional Football Leagues, Deutsche Fußball Liga, Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional , Lega Pro, European Lotteries and the Olympic Committee of Portugal.

Its Europe base will allow it to "continue to enhance the organisation's global reach and proactive stance in the fight against corruption and other detrimental practices in sport", it said.

Last week the ICSS, together with the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, published a report which revealed organised crime networks are using sport betting to launder $140 billion (£83 billion/€102 billion) each year.

"I am deeply honored to join [ICSS President] Mohammed Hanzab and his team of international experts at the ICSS, who are at the forefront of the international fight for safe, secure and fair Sport," said de Medeiros, who is also an ICSS advisory Board member, having joined at the start of the year

"At this moment, I cannot imagine a nobler cause and a more decisive and urgent challenge for sport than to ensure the highest levels of safety, security and integrity.

"I am ready to embrace these challenges, with full commitment and absolute confidence at a crucial time for the ICSS and for sport alike."

President Hanzab described de Medeiros as a "leader and pioneer from the world of football".

He added: "With his experience, knowledge and professionalism and his shared belief in protecting the values and ethics of true sport; the ICSS will continue to go from strength to strength."
