The partnership, with the Interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence for Sport Science and Development (ICESSD) at the Cape Town university, offers a "rare" opportunity for PhD candidates to conduct research on Sport for Peace and Development.

It will have a specific focus on sport-based approaches to conflict transformation addressing "local issues of conflict and violence at the grass roots in communities," and will be a particular boost to local research due to the limited opportunities available for students in Africa to progress to PhD studies, it is claimed.

Generations for Peace, a Jordan-based global non-profit organisation set up in 2007, is dedicated to sustainable peace building and conflict transformation through sport, arts, advocacy, dialogue and empowerment.

This particular partnership will also continue the organisation's investment in local research hubs to support "innovation, quality, impact and sustainability of its programmes in different continents".

Dr Marion Keim, director of ICESSD, described his "excitement to partner with Generations For Peace to promote research, teaching and community engagement in the crucial area of Sport for Peace and Development".

"It will help to empower our students and to foster social change, and to live up as much as we can and wherever we are to Nelson Mandela's legacy," she added.

Similar sentiments were added by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, founder and chairman of Generations for Peace, and by co-founder and President Sarah Kabbani Al-Feisal.

"We are delighted to partner with such a respected educational institution and looking forward to welcoming the selected candidates.

"Learning and education are at the heart of our organisation, and we are confident that the scholarship holders will be a great asset in our efforts to support positive change in local communities facing conflict and violence."

Emphasising the organisation's commitment to this partnership and the direct link between research and programmes, President Kabbani Al-Feisal described it as "an important step in the institute's development and engagement in conflict transformation".

"Significant research of this kind will reinforce the impact of our programmes in Africa," she added.
