The 20 students were awarded certificates this morning after undergoing training that will enable them to provide sports medical assistance during next year's Games, due to take place between July 4 and 18. 

The students were identified by the Games Medical Committee and University of Papua New Guinea, and trained at the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee's High Performance Centre.

After being training by medical specialist during the course, the 20 students were presented with level one certificates to recognise their achievements.

They will now be the first port of contact to respond to injuries in the field of play during the Games.

The Games Organising Committee's manager of Games Services, Twain Pambuai, used the presentation of the certificates as an opportunity to participate in a workshop with the medical students and thank them for their dedication to the Games.

He was joined by Dr David Inaho, a representative of the Medical Commission, who labelled the programme as a "once in a life time opportunity to involved in the Games through providing medical services and an important legacy component for the Games."

The Games Organising Committee is working with the University of Papua New Guinea to train up to 75 medical students to be involved in next year's Games.

It is also hoped that they will help build on the sports medical capacity within Papua New Guinea.

Following their training, and to prepare them for next year's Games, the 20 medical students will now travel to Lae for the 2014 Papua New Guinea Games.

The 2015 Pacific Games will see more than 3,000 athletes from 21 nations compete across 28 sport and disciplines in a battle of the Pacific and, in a few sport's case, battle for Olympic qualification to Rio 2016.
