mike hooper_mike_fennell_and_prince_imran_11-11-11November 11 - Prince Tunku Imran (pictured right with Mike Fennell) of Malaysia has been officially elected as the new President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) here at the organisation's General Assembly, while Canada's Bruce Robertson and South Africa's Gideon Sam have been elected as the two vice presidents of the organisation.

Imran takes up the top position at the CGF from Jamaica's Mike Fennell, as first revealed in insidethegames earlier this year, with Fennell to step down after 17 years in charge following the conclusion of the assembly.

But the big news sees Robertson and Sam elected as vice presidents following a heated four-way contest that also saw high profile candidates Kenya's Kip Keino and England's Ian Emmerson put forward for the prestigious positions.

Robertson, who is also chairman of the CGF Marketing Committee and Glasgow 2014 Coordination Commission, will now serve a third term as vice president after being re-elected, while Sam, the current President of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), is newly elected in the CGF role.

He takes up the position vacated by Prince Imran as the Malaysian steps up to CGF President.

It is a huge boost for the influential Sam (pictured) and also for South Africa, who are widely tipped to bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile Prince Imran, who served as the CGF's vice president for 11 years and is chair of the CGF Sports Committee, expressed his delight at taking over as CGF President.

"I am absolutely delighted, and proud, to be the seventh President of the Commonwealth Games Federation," said the 63-year-old, who is also the President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia and an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.

"Mike Fennell is going to be a very hard act to follow, but we have a strong board, and a clear vision and strategy for the future of the Games.

"I'm now looking forward to getting stuck in and building on Mike's legacy and our strengths to make these great Games even better."

The quadrennial elections also saw Honorary Secretary Louise Martin (pictured) of Scotland and Honorary Treasurer Austin Sealy of Barbados re-elected unopposed.

Four of the six regional vice president's were re-elected as well, with Gambia's Abdoulie M Touray for Africa, Sri Lankan Hemasiri Fernando for Asia, St Lucia's Fortuna Belrose for the Caribbean and Samoa's Vui Tapasu Leung Wai for Oceania all receiving the endorsement of their regions, providing further stability to the organisation.

Wales' Christopher Jenkins will take over as the new regional vice president for Europe and Guyana's Kalam Azad Juman-Yassin takes on the responsibility for the Americas.

The newly elected Executive Board will convene at its first meeting on tomorrow (November 12) to fill the positions of Honorary Legal Adviser, Honorary Medical Adviser and Athlete Representative.
