September 7 - Double Olympic Champion Dame Kelly Holmes was on hand at the University of Bedfordshire alongside Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon and Students’ Union President Lyndsay Murphy to celebrate the University’s commitment to the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust as an associate partner.

The University of Bedfordshire has become the first university to work with the charity in this way and in a unique partnership, has pledged to raise £25,000 ($38,485) for the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.

As part of the agreement, the University are also set to host a Backing Talent event in the region next year for around 100 young people and their families which will use retiring sports performers as role models and mentors who will pass on the benefits of their careers to the next generation.

Dame Kelly, who won the 800 and 1500 metres double at the Athens 2004 Olympics, said: "I am thrilled to be working in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire.

"Through their support, many talented young sports performers, their coaches and athletes will have the opportunity to learn from a team of world class athletes what it really takes to reach the top in elite sport."

The Trust aims to inspire young people to find and fulfil their potential in sport, or in life, through its workforce of elite sports performers.

It also supports young people to participate, stay in and excel in sport.

Dame Kelly said: "I never went to University.

"It was never mentioned at my school and I wanted to go in the Army.

"But a lot of the athletes I now work with are at University and it is a massive and important part of their lives.

"Trying to combine studying with training requires a huge amount of commitment and I see students trying to juggle both which shows a great deal of character.

"The University of Bedfordshire does a fantastic job in inspiring young people to reach their full potential and I share that same ethos so I am really looking forward to coming to see what you do.”

Ebdon said: "We are absolutely thrilled to be working with the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.

"This is a very exciting partnership which will not only benefit the Trust but also feedback into the community when we sponsor a special event next year involving local families."
